Marine Specialties Inc., an exclusive dealer of Wahoo Docks aluminum boat docks on Lakes Lanier and Hartwell, is celebrating 25 years of successful operation this month.
Marine Specialties has come a long way since their inception back in 1988.
Tom Child, the owner of MSI, began his business from the basement of his home, all while holding a full-time job as a firefighter in Atlanta.
Tom first began MSI by installing boat lifts in his spare time. After 5 years of hard work, he moved operations from his home to the shores of Lake Lanier on Browns Bridge Rd. in Gainesville, Georgia. It was at this time that Tom and MSI became a HydroHoist Boat Lift dealer. Today, MSI stands as the largest boat lift dealer in Hall County and has brought home (17) Dealer of the Year Awards, and (3) Top 3 Dealer of the Year Awards!
In 1996 the company really started to grow. This was the year that Tom was able to quit his “day job” and continue expanding his marine business full-time. In 1998, Tom added managing a barge company to his growing line-up of services.
By 2003, MSI had out-grown its building, so Tom moved operations to a larger facility at its current location at 4105 Browns Bridge Road. This is also when MSI expanded to include Wahoo Aluminum Boat Docks in their product offerings. Over the last 10 years, MSI has become one of the most successful Wahoo Docks dealers in the entire country! Every year, MSI achieves marks of distinction for their exceptional sales and service of Wahoo Docks.
Tom Child has continued his path to excellence and has grown MSI by purchasing 5 barges, adding the Shoreline Step & Path Division, opening up a 2nd location in Anderson, SC, adding the Dock Repair Division, the Dock Move Program, The Commercial Division, and the Dredging Division, and he shows no signs of slowing down. Today, MSI has 30 employees and a flourishing business that Mr. Child literally built from the ground up.
